Marguerite Sunjay
Argyranthemum frutescens "Sunjay"
Sunjay's a breakthrough daisy with fully double lemon-yellow
blooms. It's the first Federation Daisy with flowers
from the yellow spectrum, not only creating new possibilities
for colour coordination, but also representing a milestone
in marguerite breeding. Yellows have proved incredibly
difficult to breed, they're 'genetic freaks'. Breeders
from NuFlora International spent five years isolating
the yellow pigmentation from closely related species
and introducing it to the fine form of the Federation
Daisy.
Sunjay bears masses of fully double lemon-yellow flowers
on a 60cm bush with a mounding habit. It flowers early
in spring, right through to summer. A light clip late
summer will produce a mass of flowers in autumn. Flowering
early in the season, it has the positive attribute of
being "self-cleaning" with new flowers appearing
over the top of old ones.
Sunjay's another in the series of Federation
Daisies; a range of marguerite daisies bred for improved
garden performance and gardener satisfaction. A fine
choice as a specimen or en masse in gardens, and in patio
pots it pleases very quickly, filling the pot and overflowing
with a slightly cascading habit.
Features
- Bright lemon to moonlight-yellow blooms that smother
the bush for months on end.
- At home on patios and in gardens & borders.
- Fine foliage; green with a hint of blue.
- Vigorous, tidy & compact, mounding bush to around
60cm.
- An easy-grow perennial, all it needs is an occasional
clip and feed.
- Sunjay's has been awarded a prestigious Stars of
Spring 2002
Using Sunjay
- Sunjay's equally at home in gardens or pots.
- Try it on garden banks and in rockeries.
- In our trials on a northwest-facing bank it flowered
continuously from August right through to June the
following year!
- Daisies make a wonderfully bold display when used
en masse.
- Very effective as a low growing "hedge" alongside
a garden path or border.
Growing Sunjay
- Grow in full sun.
- Plant in a well-drained soil, but don't let it dry
out over summer. Yellowing of foliage is a tell-tale
sign of having got too dry.
- Tolerant of light frost.
- Needs little by way of maintenance; a feed at the
beginning of spring and the occasional clip to tidy,
maintain vigour and encourage further flowering.
Schemes and Themes with Sunjay
Cheerful, free-flowering bush daisy.
The yellow marguerite
daisies bring a feeling of cheerfulness to gardens,
flowering on and on when other plants have stopped for
a rest and delighting everyone with their simple beauty.
‘Sunjay’ has
fully double flowers that cover the compact bush, so
it’s an ideal choice for growing in a container
- imagine it in a bright blue pot. It’s compact
habit makes it good for edging a path - allow a bit of
room for spread so that when it grows it’s on the
edge of the path, not taking up so much room that it
makes walking difficult.
A little light pruning when
the flowers finally come to a halt will ensure
the compact habit is retained and encourage lots more
flowers to keep on coming.
